Union calls crisis meeting

The TGWU/ACTS after having exhausted all avenues of dialogue, in its dispute with Cammell Laird, having given no alternative but to seek a policy of full confrontation with the company, accuses the shipyard of wanting to put the clock back 50 years.

Cammell Laird management composed of Martin Laveridge and Richard Beards have launched an attack on the Union, its members and workers at the company, and claim that:

1. They refuse to recognise the legally constituted TGWU/ACTS Shop Steward Committee.

2. They refuse to recognise the TGWU/ACTS.

3. They have rejected the mediation of the GTC and Government.

4. They hassle, humiliated and threatened our members in the company. The members are called one by one to the office of the Managing Director, where they are humiliated and threatened with dismissal if they do not work overtime.

5. They have out-rightly rejected the Union claim on terms and conditions.

6. Health and Safety is non - existent it seems. The Health and Safety Officer should investigate.

7. The mess room where our members have their meals, there are cockroaches and rodent. The Health department should also investigate.

8. There seems to be illegal labour (disguised as detached workers) Cammell Laird considers that they are above the law, and at the same time they think they are a law of their own.

The TGWU/ACTS must inform Cammell Laird, that this is our country, and that they must comply with the rules and regulations of this democratic society.

For all the reasons stated above, "we have called an urgent meeting, of the District Committee, Branches and Shop Stewards and activists, for Thursday at 5.30 p.m. where the whole situation will be analysed and action taken. The TGWU/ACTS will not tolerate this arrogant and provocative attitude of the management of Cammell Laird."

This is also an issue which not only affects Cammell Laird Workers, but the whole Gibraltar workforce. "We must fight now for jobs, with terms and conditions, if we don't, then "detached workers" with low pay and non - existent conditions of employment will take over, and all the advances through the trade union movement will disappear," said District Officer Charles Sisarello, who adds that:

Cammell Laird wants to put the clock back 50 years, and we will stop it.

"We need the support of working people to eradicate this situation," he says.
