Cammell Laird questions in Parliament

The Opposition have tabled a total of 381 questions for the meeting of the Gibraltar Parliament which starts today. Opposition Leader Joe Bossano has himself tabled over 100 questions on a wide range of issues.

Mr Bossano will ask a number of questions to monitor Government revenue and the state of the economy in general. In addition to this he will ask Government to explain why it has felt a need to increase the recurring loan facilities with Natwest Bank from ?30 million to ?50 million. He will also ask Government to state what additional expenditure, if any, beyond the ?75,000 front end fee have been incurred as a result of increasing the Natwest loan facilities.

The Leader of the Opposition has tabled a number of questions on Cammell Laird. He will ask the Government to confirm whether the status of the East European frontier workers currently being used by Cammell Laird is that of a Detached Worker. Mr Bossano also wants the Government to state the rent payable for the shipyard used by Cammell Laird in the current financial year. On the same subject, he will ask Government to state when Cammell Laird commenced their new Enhanced Apprentices Scheme, how many apprentices have been taken on and under what scheme. Mr Bossano will also ask Government to state by how many employees has the full time permanent workforce of Cammell Laird increased during 2006.

Mr Bossano has tabled a number of questions on naturalization. He will ask the Government to say whether they have any discretion on the language requirements in respect of applications for naturalization by spouses of Gibraltarians and resident British citizens. The Opposition Leader will also want to establish for each year since 1996/97 how many applications for the suspension of residential restrictions in order to apply for naturalization have been received and of these how many have been rejected. He has asked Government for a breakdown for each year showing the years of residence in Gibraltar, gender and whether the individual was the spouse of a British National in respect of each applicant.

On other issues, Mr Bossano will probe the Government on whether they propose to conduct an environmental impact assessment in respect of the proposed project to provide a tunnel access to the frontier with Spain through Eastern Beach. He will ask whether there are any circumstances in which the payments made by MCB in respect of the Eastside Project would have to be refunded, and if so, specify what such circumstances would be and whether there is a cut off date.

The Leader of the Opposition will ask Government to say what is the total cost of the catering facility of the Gibraltar Health Authority. He also wants Government to confirm what is the ceiling of the additional cost of the Leisure Centre in excess of the ?5.5 million paid by the developer and how much has the Government paid to date.
