Gurkhas in Gibraltar unrelated to ISP contract

The HQBF say they want to make it clear that the presence in Gibraltar of the Gurkhas is unrelated to the ongoing negotiations on the ISP contract.

The HQBF have found it necessary making a statement on this following reports that linked the Gurkhas with union fears that the visiting engineeers would be used in the event of a breakdown in the current negotiations over the MOD contract.

The Command British Forces said: "HQBF can confirm that the Queens Gurkha Engineers in Gibraltar as part of Exercise 28th Shot are here with the intention of carrying out construction tasks on a number of MoD facilities. This work will allow them to consolidate their tradesman?s skills whilst simultaneously improving the MoD building infrastructure for the future.

"The command would like to stress that the presence of the Gurkhas has no relation to the ongoing negotiations with the GoG and the trade unions over the ISP announcement, and to reinforce the fact that they are not here as part of any contingency planning arrangements.

"Exercise 28th Shot is the latest in the ?Shot? series of exercises which have been taking place in Gibraltar for a number of years. This particular exercise was planned 2 years ago, with the sole aim of training the personnel involved."
