Marillion concert
|
British Rock act Marillion will be performing live in Gibraltar on Saturday 14th April at the Tercentenary Sports Hall. The Gibraltar concert will be the inaugural date of an extensive European tour.
Both the Ministry of Culture and the promoters of the event, Planet Projects, have been able to secure the contracting of Marillion after several weeks of negotiations.
The event has been made possible due to generous sponsorship which has resulted not only in the event being logistically and financially feasible but in ticket prices being considerably cheaper and so more accessible than the rest of the European tour dates, including United Kingdom and Spain.
It is expected that a significant number of international fans will be travelling to the Rock specifically for this Marillion concert, says a Government press release.
Marillion is a successful Rock/Alternative/Progressive band that has sold millions of records and continues to release commercially successful and critically-acclaimed albums. The concert will coincide with the release of the band's fourteenth studio album, titled "Somewhere Else", which will be released worldwide on 9th April 2007.
Marillion's frontman Steve Hogarth has already performed locally, having delivered a stunning solo set at a packed St Michael's Cave during last year's National Week celebrations. The concert of 14th April 2007 is, however, distinct: A full-band Marillion show with all the extensive sound and lighting facilities that entails.
Minister for Culture, Fabian Vinet, has personally been involved in the arrangements and has welcomed the concert: "To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time that Gibraltar has been included as an integral part of a major Rock ensemble's international tour. The aim of attracting Marillion to Gibraltar has therefore been twofold. First, to give Gibraltarians the chance to witness one of the world's most talented bands. Secondly, to hopefully place Gibraltar on the European live circuit, something that may attract other major bands and solo artists to perform locally."
Mr Vinet has also explained that it has been an important coup for the European tour to commence here: "This is a very extensive European tour made up of forty dates, performing in cities such as London, Glasgow, Rome, Lisbon, Cologne, Munich, Budapest, Paris, Madrid and Warsaw. For the tour to actually start in Gibraltar is, I feel, a worthy achievement. Accordingly, music media journalists will be invited by theconcert promoter to visit Gibraltar to cover the event internationally. All of this, coupled with the competitively-priced tickets (?6 cheaper than London; 6 Euros cheaper than Lisbon), will I hope result in a large audience for what promises to be an unforgettable concert. I would like to sincerely thank the Bonita Trust, Party Gaming and Ocean Village for their generosity and the enthusiasm with which they have approached this project."
The support act due to perform prior to Marillion is local group Super Wookie, who will be playing exclusively original material.
Tickets will be priced at ?17 or 24 Euros.
