Union question persists at Cammell Laird

Last week, the Directors and Management of Cammell Laird proposed to the workforce the setting up of a committee of reps to negotiate with the company, as an alternative to the Union Organisation. This was overwhelmingly rejected and the workforce spoke loud and clear that they wanted to be represented by the TGWU/ACTS Union, says the union.

They add: "The company must accept the democratic expressed wishes of its workforce, if they have any respect for the staff. The company alleged in a leaflet that their greatest asset was the workforce. This seems to be totally false and being economical with the truth, when they are taking a negative position on the aspiration of its workforce.

"The Cammell Laird Company must come to terms with reality and accept the role of the Trade Unions as every other company does in Gibraltar, as the Gibraltar Trades Council has already stated.

"We want the company to accept this principle. We have already written to the company on two occasions without any response forthcoming.

"The situation is very clear; the workers in Cammell Laird want to be represented by TGWU/ACTS, our Union is more than happy to represent them. When these two conditions are met, no one can prevent the recognition and representation of our members in Cammell Laird.

"We will soon be arranging a general meeting of members, where their grievances will be put to management for negotiation and discussion."
