It is 'illegal and forbidden' to hamper the disabled

The Gibraltar community has been recently subjected to political school ground scraps with issues dealing with disabilities, and in most case it is justifiable. Allegations, accusations, to Social Services Minister Yvette Del Agua have been the target of discussion with concerns of the crisis within the Social Services Agency and the care of our disabled and their families, says the Gibraltar Local Disability Movement.

The Movement calls upon those with the responsibility in providing facilities for the parents of disabled, that it should not hamper any support that is needed in the well being of the disabled, and that of its family members. And if it is the case, that a family member with a disabled is being hampered, it must remind that it is illegal and forbidden by law. The Gibraltar Local Disability Movement will also like to add that favoritism to who gets the services of any public service, constitutes an act of illegal act of its duties, and therefore is illegal.

They say they would also like to call upon Government that a new building be made to house the service of the Dr Giraldi Home and that of the respite services. As it clear to see that this building has been ill design for today's needs, and its multiple roll its house today.

They go on to remind that the International Day of Disabled Persons starts on 3 December 2006. And aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. The theme of the Day is based on the goal of full and equal enjoyment of human rights and participation in society by persons with disabilities, established by the World Programmed of Action concerning Disabled Persons, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1982, Of which additional information can be seen on its news room, at www.gibraltardisability.com. "We must add that the countdown of Gibraltar Government transposing into law the EU directive on Equality in Employment is still running and it has less than 25 days of its implementation. And the Disability Discrimination Act legislation, which was told to us by Government, it was hoping to have it on the statute book by December this year," they add.

The Gibraltar Local Disability Movement likes Government to make use of the media to inform and promote disability regarding, the implementing directive, Disability Discrimination Act, and to sensitive policies, programmes and projects and to promote public awareness on disabilities.
