Tomorrow is Ban Bullying At Work Day
|
Dignity At Work Now Gibraltar will join the UK in the Ban Bullying at Work day, which is tomorrow. Members of DAWN will be handing out information leaflets in the main street area, namely: ICC, Catholic Cathedral and opposite the Convent.
The main object of this day is to raise awareness of bullying in our places of work as well as promoting respect and dignity among workers, whatever their status.
More than 2 million people are bullied at work in the UK today. European studies show a high prevalence (16% - 25%) of bullying in the private and public sectors. Nevertheless, it is known that it continues being a work related problem rarely reported by victims and witnesses alike.
Bullying could be defined as aggressive and negative behaviour in the work place. It is characteristic of bullying that one or more individuals perceive themselves to be the object of negative actions by fellow workers, persistently and systematically, during prolonged periods of time. These negative actions produce a significant state of suffering, defencelessness and victimisation on these individuals.
Bullying can be described as offensive, abusive, malicious, insulting or intimidating behaviour. Examples of bullying are: insults, unjustified criticism, spreading malicious rumours, ridiculing or demeaning someone, exclusion, overbearing supervision and other misuse of power or position, deliberately undermining people and blocking promotion or training opportunities, punishment imposed without reasonable justification, changes in the duties or responsibilities of the employee to the employee's detriment without reasonable justification
It can make employees lives a misery, affect their performance and damage their careers. Bullying has severe consequences over the psychological and physical health of people. Studies show that people suffering the effects of bullying develop psychiatric symptoms, such as: depression, anxiety, suicidal behaviour, post traumatic stress disorder among others. It can also have a serious impact on organisations: indeed, statistics show that in the UK, each year as many as 18.9 million working days are lost to bullying and up to a half of all stress-related illnesses are a direct result of bullying.
