The Ministry of Employment in collaboration with the Health and Safety Advisory Council will be holding a number of events to mark the occasion of European Week for Safety and Health at Work 2006.
This year's campaign slogan is 'Safe Start' and is dedicated to the occupational safety and health of young people.
SEMINAR
The main event will be a half-day seminar to be held at the John Mackintosh Hall on Monday 23rd October.
The seminar will start at 9.30am and will be officially opened by the Minister for Employment, Joe Holliday.
The main speaker will be Mr Neil Budsworth, President of the Institution of Safety and Health of the UK.
Other speakers include Mr John Robba, a member of the Health & Safety Advisory Council, who will be presenting the H&S Report 2005, Mr Peter Latin, Managing Director of AquaGib, who will address the issue of 'The Application of Health & Safety in a Utility', Dr Vijay Kumar, Director of Public Health, who will give a presentation on 'Occupational Illnesses of Public Health Importance' and Mr Richard Labrador, Chartered Health and Safety Practitioner, who will address the topic of 'Rights and Responsibilities - Employers and Employees - in Occupational Health and Safety'.
The general public is cordially invited to attend.
SCHOOLS
Senior students from Westside and Bayside Schools, as well as those from the Gibraltar College of Further Education, have been invited to attend the seminar.
Various health and safety practitioners will also be undertaking a number of talks at both schools and the college in an effort to raise general level of awareness among younger students in matters relating to health and safety.
The Health & Safety Advisory Council is also pursuing through the Department of Education and Training ways and means in which it may assist in enhancing relevant aspects of health and safety already included in the Personal, Social and Health Education programmes of the two secondary schools.
OTHER EVENTS
On Saturday 21st October, an awareness/information stand will be operational at John Mackintosh Square as from 10.00am, from where will be issued relevant information packs, leaflets, fliers, etc. The Minister for Employment is expected to visit the stand at midday.
Various articles relating to general aspects of health and safety will be published by the press media during the course of Health and Safety Week.
A series of competitions have also been organised through GBC TV and Radio aimed at the general public. Radio Gibraltar listeners will be asked a question relating to a short health and safety awareness film snippet that will have been screened by GBC TV the night before.
Another competition will entail spotting a number of possible health and safety hazards on a construction site drawing that will appear in the Gibraltar Chronicle.
Prizes will be awarded to all winners.
"I believe it is of prime importance that we are all aware of the Health and Safety issues that affect us daily in our working lives", said Mr Holliday. "I therefore welcome the fact that Gibraltar has organised a programme of events for the European Week for Health and Safety. I would like to encourage as many people as possible, particularly young workers, to get involved in whatever way they can in next week's activities."
