How the system would work under the new airport deal
|
A first attempt to illustrate how passengers will fare as a result of the proposed new airport agreement is published in Gibraltar today by PANORAMA.
Passengers originating or going to Spain
They arrive at Gibraltar, go through the Gibraltar terminal and use an electric staircase on the Spanish side of the terminal to exit to Spain, without any controls. If coming from La Linea to catch a plane in Gibraltar, the opposite procedures take place.
Passengers originating or coming to Gibraltar
Upon arrival at Gibraltar, they enter the Gibraltar terminal and proceed to British controls and then, via the electric staircase, to Spanish controls on the Spanish side of the terminal. Opposite procedures apply when Gibraltar passengers decide to catch a plane at Gibraltar airport.
There is one terminal but two users, Gibraltar and Spain. The Spanish end of the terminal will overhang the Spanish side of the frontier.
Upon arrival via the electric staircase to the Spanish side of the terminal, passengers will find the Spanish controls on one side and the British controls on the other. A single corridor will lead to and from the aircraft.

This is officially explained in the text of the agreement as follows:
'FLYING FROM GIBRALTAR TO A SPANISH AIRPORT -Passengers flying from Gibraltar airport to a Spanish airport, accessing the terminal via the direct access from the Spanish side of the frontier, will be treated as if they had not left the Spanish travel area.
OTHER PASSENGERS (that is, from Gibraltar) will be checked into the Spanish travel area before boarding the aeroplane. This check will be carried out by Spanish officials. *FLYING TO GIBRALTAR AIRPORT FROM A SPANISH
AIRPORT: Passengers flying to Gibraltar airport from a Spanish airport and exiting the terminal via the direct access to the Spanish side of the frontier will also be treated as if they had not left the Spanish travel area. OTHER PASSENGERS travelling to Gibraltar airport from a Spanish airport,(if on their way to Gibraltar itself) after they have disembarked, will go through a Spanish exit check, which will be carried out by Spanish officials. These passengers will then continue to a place where the Gibraltar authorities will carry out an appropriate identity/ passport check to clear entry into Gibraltar.
