Minehunter on the Rock

The Hunt Class Warship HMS Hurworth docked in Gibraltar Sunday morning for a routine visit before commencing her deployment to the Eastern Mediterranean.

The ship sailed from her homeport of Portsmouth last week and whilst in the area will be engaged on testing her new Sonar 2193 in the warmer waters of the Med. While she is on task she will be exercising with the NATO Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1, (SNMCMG1 for short), alongside other ships from Greece, Turkey, Spain, Italy and Germany in the waters off of Toulon and Turkey. During her deployment she will also pay a visit to Malta to further cement her ties with the Island.

The first HMS Hurworth was a Hunt class destroyer that played an important part in escorting the convoy that effectively marked the lifting of the siege of Malta in November 1942. Her journey back to the UK at the end of the year will see her sail up the Gironde to Bordeaux, in France, for the annual celebrations of "Operation Frankton" better known to most of us as the "Cockleshell Heroes", the raid undertaken by Royal Marines in canoes during December 1942.
