Spain tightens the leash on frontier pets

by Brian McCann
At a time when many people are hoping for a freer flowing frontier, Spain seems to have once again tightened the screws for no apparent specific reason

At exactly 5pm last Friday a couple crossing into Spain on foot had both British passports thoroughly examined. The National Policeman then noticed that they had a pup in a small cage, and asked them for the dog's international health certificate.

Luckily the couple were in possession of the document, and after the policeman had studied it in great detail they were allowed to continue on their way.

As it is common for Gibraltarians to take their dogs - and even cats - with them when they visit Spain, this new tightening up of a long-standing relaxed attitude will now have to be borne in mind.

Worse still, non-residents who bring their dogs into Gibraltar unhindered by either the Spanish or Gibraltar authorities may now find they are unable to re-enter Spain if they do not have the animal's papers with them.

What next?
