Drugs, alcohol abuse and lack of sexual education are main concerns of youth
|
by Chloe Loddo: The National Youth Council of Gibraltar recently held a conference, which successfully came to a close last Wednesday. Young people were invited from Youth Forums in Poole and Bracknell in order to partake in discussions so that the youth of Gibraltar could get a fuller range of views outside those of Gibraltar alone.
The main concerns of the NYCG are sexual education, or rather lack of sexual education in Gibraltar and drugs and alcohol abuse. Most importantly they are concerned with the lack of Youth Rights in Gibraltar. One of the Council's long-term aims is to try and establish a Youth Policy in Gibraltar, like there are in most modern and developed countries. They also want to make young people aware of their rights as citizens and how to get them more involved in the basic aspects of life.
The conference came to a close in a post-conference evening of entertainment held at the Mount last Wednesday. The evening began with food and drink and the perfomers mingling and getting to know the young visitors. Urban Dance performed a few pieces which went down extremely well with their visting audience and musicians Adrian Pisarello and Eric Rowbottom played a number of very popular songs which had everybody attending up on their feet dancing and even waltzing!
The entertainment ended with some comedy sketches by the Students Actors Society (SAS) as well as some stand up comedy. From sketches containing blatant sexual innuendos, slapstick comedy and finally the hilarious stand-up, the audience were laughing constantly and were kept well- entertained throughout.
As the evening drew to a close, our young visitors asked everyone to sign their names on the Gibraltar flag, an extremely rewarding gesture as it highlights how they had a great time staying in Gibraltar and meeting and getting to know the youth of Gibraltar.
