Referendum will perpetuate colonial status, says SDGG
|
The holding of a referendum on the new constitution as agreed by our representatives in the House of Assembly will simply perpetuate Gibraltar's status as a non-self governing territory and will make Gibraltarians look like the colonial equivalent of "turkeys voting for Christmas", says the SDGG.
However 'modern' and 'mature' Gibraltar's relationship with the U.K. may be the fact remains that it will still be a colonial relationship. The most optimistic description can well be that we are halfway there but since Gibraltar started on the road to decolonisation 60 years ago the scenario can only be considered very pessimistic!
On March 28th the Spanish Foreign Minister, Sr Moratinos, described the new constitution as being a modernisation of Gibraltar's colonial relationship with the U.K. with neither its text nor any referendum having any effect on the decolonisation issue. He described the referendum as a democratic exercise to provide more efficient government and said that Gibraltar's colonial status would remain unchanged thereafter.
The SDGG adds: Spain may welcome a YES vote since its objectives will remain unaffected by the referendum; the perpetuation of the colonial status will continue to maintain Spain's criterion that the only option available to us is territorial integration.
DOOR OPEN
The SDGG calls upon the elected leaders to abandon the idea of holding a referendum since it would make our people active participants in perpetuating the colonial status, and by doing so, active participants in leaving the door open to Spain's claims.
