Govt condemns Bruzon for 'holier than thou' attitude
|
Government says it condemns the GSLP Opposition spokesperson for Housing, Mr Charles Bruzon, for persisting with his "holier than thou" attitude and his "shameless tactic" of using the elderly and sick in an attempt to score cheap political points.
A resume of events following the medical "A" categorisation and re-housing request submitted by Mr and Mrs Duarte is given as follows by the Government in a Press release:
1. After various exchanges of correspondence between the Duarte family and Housing Ministry Officials, Mr and Mrs Duarte's daughter was invited to discuss the matter with the Housing Manager. Following this Mrs Duarte was seen by the Minister who informed her that a son who lived with her at Laguna Estate was already the tenant at another Government flat at Richardson's Passage. Since it was unfair and unacceptable for a person to be a tenant at more than one Government flat at the same time this situation needed to be regularised. Once this was done Mr and Mrs Duarte would be re-housed immediately a suitable flat became available.
2. Before regularising their son's position the Duarte family took their case to the Ombudsman for an independent evaluation of the procedures being used by the Housing Ministry in this case. After studying all aspects of the case the Ombudsman concluded that: " I am of the view that your treatment of this complaint is an example of good administrative procedure?????? I am of the opinion that your course of action is in keeping with established criteria and that there has been no act of maladministration".
3. Mr and Mrs Duarte have now regularised their son's position and the established procedure for re-housing can now be applied to this elderly couple.
4. Government adds that it "roundly condemns" the GSLP for once again attempting to make political capital out of the needs of the sick and elderly even when their false allegations of an uncaring and inconsiderate Government fly in the face of the truth and the facts in housing matters, as well as in many other social areas of Government in which incidentally, the record of the GSLP is particularly abysmal.
