Report refers to Spain's continued refusal to recognise Gibraltar's 350 telephone code

The Gibraltar Regulatory Authority has published its Annual Report for the year 2005-2006. The report was laid before the House of Assembly ysterday by the Chief Minister, Peter Caruana.

Since the year 2000, the Gibraltar Regulatory Authority is assigned the duty of regulating the telecommunications industry. It is also responsible for regulating broadcasting content under the European Parliament Elections Ordinance and has been appointed Data Protection Commissioner under the Data Protection Ordinance 2004 which commenced this year. The GRA will also be the Gambling Commissioner on commencement of the Gambling Ordinance 2005.

In his statement in the Annual Report, Chief Executive Mr. Paul Canessa outlines specific areas in which the GRA has been involved as well as noting the continued refusal by Spain to recognise the Gibraltar 350 IDD code.

Mr Canessa's opening statement highlights significant areas of activity such as the GRA's participation in two international forums for regulators of communications and audiovisual media. He also comments on the limited competition to Gibtelecom currently provided by Sapphire Networks and notes that the only area which is fully competitive is the provision of Voice Over Internet Telephony (VOIP) with three operators, Gibtelecom, EasyCall and Ad-Lib well established in the market.
