Adolfo Canepa to be new Mayor

• Former Miss World Kaiane Aldorino to be Deputy

The Speaker Adolfo Canepa is to be appoined Mayor of Gibraltar.And former Miss World Kaiane Aldorino is to be the Deputy Mayor. It will happen when a motion by the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo is passed at the next meeting of Parliament this week.

This is the text of the motion being moved by the Chief Minister which will no doubt receive unanimous support: “This House appoints the Hon Adolfo Canepa GMH OBE MP to be Mayor of Gibraltar, and Ms Kaiane Aldorino GMH to be his deputy.”

Being mayor will be nothing new to Mr Canepa, as he discharged mayoral duties back in 1976 for two years.

He has also been Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition during his long and distinguised political career with the AACR.

Mr Canepa was born in London in December 1940 during the wartime evacuation of Gibraltarians.

A graduate teacher, his education was at the Grammar School, then on to Leicester University for a BSc (Hons) in Maths, and on to St Mary's College Twickenhan for his Dip Ed.

He rose being Deputy Headmaster at the Grammar School (1969-72) and then went on to stand for election (1972) to the then House of Assembly. He was Minister for Labour and Social Security (1972-1981) and then Minister for Economic Development. He was Deputy Leader AACR from 1979 to 1987, and leader of the GLP/AACR from 1987 to 1991.

Kaiane Aldorino, who is to become his deputy, is Gibraltar's first and only Miss World having won the title in 2009, to much public acclaim. She is a very popular and likeable person.
