Fleas winning the battle - school to be closed for rest of week!
|
Westside School is to remain closed for the rest of the week, due to the flea infestation that refuses to go away. The whole of the school is affected.
This confirms that the problem appears to be more serious and deep-rooted than may have been thought at first. That being the case, how come that such a widespread problem has not been attended to before it was too late?
A department of education statement yesterday afternoon reiterated that Westside School has, since last week, been affected by a flea infestation, "which has spread throughout the whole of the school area" and was initially caused by feral cats.
Large scale disinfestations of the whole premises was carried out on Friday lasting from 8am till the early hours of Saturday morning.
"Unfortunately," said the statement, "fleas are hardy creatures and in view of the extent of the problem and the large areas involved within the school, the initial treatment has not been fully successful and there are still areas affected within the school."
At this late stage, the Education department appears to have realised that "the continued use of the school would result in the physical carriage of fleas from one area to another, thus continuing to spread the infestation."
They say it would also be difficult to effectively treat the premises under these conditions.
At this time of the year and with a ready supply of food, the multiplication rate of the fleas would be at a maximum. Apart from disinfestations to cut down on existing numbers of fleas, it is essential to eliminate the primary hosts (cats) and cut down on food supply (humans).
In view of the above, the Government has decided to close Westside School for the rest of the week to enable the Environmental Agency to deal effectively with this situation.
