Storm over 'serious fault' in Gibtelecom's ADSL system

Gibtelecom has come out saying that it regrets to inform customers that as a result of a serious technical fault on some ADSL internet equipment, there was an interruption of service within some areas of Gibraltar on Wednesday morning.

The areas affected were the south district and parts of the central town area. Europort/Westside and the east of the Rock were not affected by the fault.

"Although the service was generally resumed by mid-morning, some customers with particular internet set-ups may have continued to experience problems and remedial works continued during the course of the day," they say.

Adrian Moreno, Director of Internet Operations, said ?the fault occurred at around 06:00 Wednesday morning whilst essential maintenance was being carried out. Gibtelecom?s internet engineers resolved the problems since, with the assistance of the equipment manufacturers working remotely from the UK?.

He added that from the number of customer calls logged in our 24/7 Call Centre, it is evident how many more people and businesses are now dependent on the internet. Gibtelecom apologises for the inconvenience caused, but regrettably these sort of incidents do happen from time to time. The company?s objective has been to get every customer up and running again as quickly as possible.

To ensure, together with the manufacturer, that there is no repeat of the particular fault the company says its IP engineers will undertake further works on the configuration of some ADSL equipment in the silent hours (ie after midnight) over the next couple of days.
