Both GJFL sides through to quarterfinals

oth the GJFL sides participating in the 16th Edition of the Holland Cup have progressed through to the quarterfinal stages of this prestigious competition after Thursday's tough round of matches. The U16 side faced three games in the space of five hours which surely, after the round of results, proves the magnificent commitment and effort of both the players and the management team.

U16 10 Netherlands 0
U16 0 USA (1) 4
U16 3 USA (2) 1

This round of two wins and a defeat together with yesterdays win allows our U16 side to progress as the runner up of the group. Tomorrow they face a tough quarterfinal match against another American team. The Yankees have made terrific progress during the past years especially through their undoubted wealth which they are investing in their youth teams. For the past two seasons the Americans ahead dominated the senior competitions of the Holland Cup.

No doubt that our younger players did not want their elder colleagues to grab all the headlines and also progressed to the quarterfinals. Their two wins allowed them to progress to this stage.

U14 1 USA (1) 0

U14 8 Netherlands 0

Lets hope that luck is on our side and tomorrow we can confirm our two teams participation in the all important finals scheduled for Saturday.

BADMINTON
The Gibraltar Badminton Association their season a couple of weeks ago after having completed some rescheduled matches. The Doubles League First Division was won by Elite made up of Chris Gomez, Graham Olivero, Michael Chevasco, Charles Avellano (jnr) and Linda Alvarez. They showed great consistency throughout the whole season and ended up as worthy champions. Autosport A were runners up this season proving a good challenge to the eventual champions. Autosport is made up of the more veteran players in the Association, Francis Viales, Patrick Gabay, Maurice Montegriffo, Charles Avellano (snr) and Mal Green.
The Second Division was won by The New Chemist who proved to be the strongest team by far. They are comprised of some of the junior players, Ken Wong, Mathew Brown, Francis Carreras and Anthony Roper. No doubt they will be looking forward to playing in the first division next season. Gibralflora B were Runners Up in Division Two.
The National Squad returned from the controversial Sudirman Cup (world team championships) in Seville where they played for the first time. The World Cup is divided into seven different groups which are then subdivided into Groups A and B. This way teams will only play against others of a similar standard and try to seek promotion to a higher group. It is the biggest tournament in the IBF Calender where teams can measure their standard against that of other Associations. Some of the teams that Gibraltar have played before in the Island Games were also present, i.e. Greenland and Faroe Islands. The results went as follows:

Gibraltar 0 Luxembourg 5
Gibraltar 0 Mexico 5
Gibraltar 2 Morocco 3

The GBA is now awaiting the court case which should take place in August and they are hoping for a positive outcome. They were unable to take part in the Isle of Man Island games because both tournaments were only five weeks apart and the finances did not allow for participation in both events. In 2003 the Sudirman Cup will take place in the Netherlands early in March and they will hopefully be able to attend both the Sudirman Cup and the Island Games in Guernsey. They have already started a new training programme and fund raising for both events. The GBA would like to thank the following local companies for sponsoring them in the 2001 World Cup.

Royal Bank of Scotland
